A Health & Safety assessment was probably the first and possibly the risk assessment undertaken by your organisation.

It is mandatory for organizations employing 5 or more people to have a Health & Safety Policy and perform risk assessments. Usually these are raw statements of facts - the hazards, current and future preventative actions - but think how much more useful this would be if the actions were costed and management could see the financial benefits.

Large businesses and those involved in manufacturing or other hazardous activities will almost certainly have a Health & Safety professional to perform assessments, find solutions and train staff. There is a myriad of specialised Health & Safety software packages on the market today. Most are exceedingly proficient at producing Health & Safety assessments, suggesting where hazards may be found and proposing solutions to reduce the risk.

These packages, however, rarely provide the impact of risk in financial terms and, rarer still, interface with the organisation's overall risk management plans.
